Just glancing at programmes on tonight, TG4 managed two original plays and has consistently high quality original material in drama, music, documentaries history and (less so) current affairs, night after night.

RTE 1 and 2 have the same turgid offer of tired and incredible soaps, bought in US series, scandal and Government friendly, narrowly focused news.

Just in financial terms, I find it very hard to understand how TG4 is able to produce quality original material and RT1 and 2, not.

Does anyone have any idea what the respective programme budgets are, and what is the explanation for TG4s superior programming?

Some of TG4's programmes are also on BBC NI so either the costs are shared or they sell them on.

I've often been struck by the fact that RTE 1 and 2 don't seem to sell anything on.

When is the last time that they produced anything worth selling on. TG4 have an advantage in that their programmes are in Irish so if another channel is required to show Irish language programmes they dont have much choice.

I would guess that TG4 mainly employs people who love the language and that produces more quality. Half of RTÉ are only in it for the money.

The production values are often fairly basic in TG4 drama, but they still need cameramen, lighting, actors and sets and must pay union rates. They produce very acceptable and workmanlike programmes.

RTE 1 and 2 seem to aim at a very low level and hit the target.

I think it is the best station going. Even when living abroad, I view their shows via the website. On a side note, apparently Ros na Rún is very popular in parts of America.

How many shows would TG4 make with Ryan Tubridy's salary?

I think you are being generous. In my opinion they still miss the low target by a considerable amount.

This evening TG4 had two original plays, then a stunning documentary on a Venezuelan youth orchestra, and now another documentary on a Sami reindeerherdsman.

There are a lot of independent type tv stations around the world which make these style documentaries. SBS in Australia would be one example. Maybe they have some sort of arrangement. Their documentaries are class. Some of my friends in England watch them.

I would have to agree..i am amazed with the poor quality high cost TV that RTE pump out,

These days i seem to have more channels and less choice .Perhaps they have some of the monkeys from the Zoo deciding what movies to put on ,where to pump money into shows ect.. i wonder how much The rose of tralee costs us ..to name but one

TG4 on the other hand has no gimmicks and some great TV .

In my humble opinion ,this is due to the lac of money and having there feet firmly in reality .

We could do worse imo than apply their principles to the way we run the health services and everything else.

TG4 is a good station which features some great sport and documentaries; often stuff that you wouldn't see anywhere else like last Sunday they showed an international rules game from early in the decade. I do however, have one particular problem with the channel:

Seriously, they need to sort that out.

TG4 differs from RTE in that it seems to actually not be ashamed of its Irishness. TG4 would never produce a disgustingly crawling lickspittle-fest like RTE's 'What if Lynch Had Invaded?', and RTE would never show anything like TG4's account of the life and death of Eddie Fullerton or their docs about social injustice in Latin America, etc. I'd gladly see RTE closed down entirely if it meant the entire budget was handed over to TG4.
