Liz McManus goes back a way through Democratic Left and the Workers Party.

It's very strongly rumoured that she's to announce that she won't run in the GE.

Labour has started canvassing and will want to reselect.

It's a particularly shitty time to be a politician. Liz is old enough to have a comfortable retirement on her TD's pension. I'd like to be in her position at her age. It's hard to blame her.

Labour is really gearing up for the next GE. There may be at least one other announcement this week: people have been asked to declare.

Hardly surprising. An election is a hissy fit away. I'll be surprised if we don't have a GE within 5-6 months. Paddy power aren't even taking bets on the date at the moment.

Hadn't actually noticed, but she has been off the radar for a while to my knowledge.

Could Labour merely be canvassing to keep their momentum up. Gilmore won't want to be remembered as a "nearly guy".

Heard that this is confirmed, but no source.....

Thinking about it, Liz seems to have been semi-retired for some time. Her tv and radio appearances over the last year were very poor - clearly unresearched. Perhaps there was a health issue or she had just run out of steam. Clearly time to call a halt though.

Here we go - Irish Times report on her "standing down"

Just for the record -
.................................................. ..............................

LIZ McMANUS NOT TO SEEK RE-ELECTION TO DAIL

For the past 31 years, I have served as a public representative, firstly on Bray and Wicklow Councils, and then as TD in Dáil Éireann since 1992.

It has been a privilege for me to represent Co. Wicklow for the Labour Party and I will continue to do so to the best of my ability until the next General Election. I believe, however, that it is vital that Labour offers new, younger candidates to the electorate at the next General Election.

Our determination must be to win two seats in Co. Wicklow. With the right candidates and a strong campaign we can achieve that goal. So I have decided not to put my name forward for nomination at the selection convention to be held later this year,

Until the next Election is called – whenever that may be – I will continue to provide the best service possible to my constituents as an active member of the Oireachtas.

After I retire as a TD at the next Election, I intend to continue as an active member of the Labour Party.

We are steadily growing support for our party and for our leader Eamon Gilmore TD. Our success is a great tribute to the work put in by Labour members here in Co. Wicklow.

Ireland is crying out for a fresh start and a new beginning. For many people, times are hard; unemployment and poverty are on the rise. Our society needs a strong and powerful Labour presence in Government. With hard work and dedication, together, we can achieve a great result for Co. Wicklow.

I look forward to working with you to meet that challenge.

Finally I want to say how much I have appreciated the support I have received over the past 3i years from the people of Wicklow and most of all from the members of the Labour Party in the county.

He was in TCD with a friend. Heard that he used to drop mother's name quite a bit.

That said, the family have a good rep in Wicklow. John McManus would have been equally prominent in the WP. Suppose it makes sense.

Good to know that nepotism is alive and well in all parties.

A quick google throws up a Luke McManus who is involved in film and media. Not the same person?

I wouldn't hold that against Luke ... considering the current clusterf*ck produced by the 'politically experienced'. ;)

I find it more disturbing that he's best known for his TV series "Psych Ward". And the name of his company, Madhouse Films, doesn't inspire much hope either. :p

If he's a son of a sitting TD and a CC, you can be sure he wants to stand.

That is another example of family dynasties in politics. They would think it would be a shoo in just because of their famous father or mother or relative politican etc.

The name of his company is what qualifies him for entry to the Dail. Anyway, it seems to be somebody else entirely.

I imagine he'd want to stand, but I don't know if he would be selected to stand. I think it's more likely that Lab Tom Fortune would be selected - he's Cathaoirleach of Wicklow Co Council and has much more experience. They are in the same electoral area.

It seems that it's been confirmed that McManus jnr. will run.

Liz McManus has also said that more women are needed in the Dail...

Perhaps she meant the Dail bar. To serve the poor lads a well earned drink after a tough day.
