According to the official Chinese Daily newspaper, medical tests performed on the babies found levels of estrogens circulating in their bloodstreams that are as high as those found in most adult women. These babies are between four and 15 months old. And the evidence is overwhelming that the milk formula they have been fed is responsible.http://www.huffingtonpost.com/john-robbins/female-infants-growing-br_b_676402.html

Is it a particular formula or formulas in general?

There've been a few babyfood problems in China. I read an article once about food adulteration in the 18th century - break was full of chalk and arsenic. There was no regulation at all. There are problems with chemicals and hormones now - but overall people live a lot longer.

It's a particular formula made by Synutra International. Some information can be found here (note that the tabs near the top of the page lead to more info): http://www.reuters.com/finance/stocks/companyProfile?rpc=66&symbol=SYUT.O

It would seem that the hormones that made their way into the baby formula originated on dairy farms. As of yet, there is no law in China that forbids or regulates the use of such hormones. It should also be noted, that despite this company's effort to distance itself from the practices of such farms, it has owned (I'm unsure if it still does) some huge dairy farms and milk processing factories in China.

China has an incredibly bad record in the production of foodstuffs and other items. The company lost more than 25% of its share value on NASDAQ since this story broke. Hopefully Chinese authorities will recognise the value of regulation as news of this latest disaster spreads.
