View Full Version : EU Appointment of Bird Watcher Angers Farmers
The Green party are yet again accused of cronyism. How far the party of principle have fallen:-
FURTHER clashes between rural Fianna Fáil TDs and the Greens in Government are likely after a member of BirdWatchIreland was chosen to replace a farmers’ group to represent Ireland on an EU policy committee.
The Greens were accused of "cronyism" by Labour’s spokesperson on agriculture, Sean Sherlock, who said they were "for the birds" and their hands were "as soiled as any other party in respect of political appointees.

The accusation of cronyism is without foundation on this occasion. The EESC has environmental issues as part of its remit and up to now we had no one from that sector.
Interesting that the politicial whinging about this is from 2 wet behind the ears TDs. Lab's Sherlock is the little arsehole whose previous pearl of wisdom was the idea workers should shut up and take what they're given (surely the opposition TD who most deserves to lose his seat.) FG expressed its opposition to representation for the environmental sector via one Andrew Doyle, a hitherto invisible first termer newly appointed to Kenny's B team.

Sean Sherlock is a member of this forum, so I trust you are ready to stand over that, face to face :).
I have a lot of time for Birdwatch Ireland, but very little for Partnership and "pillars". I'd need to know more about what this committee does before I start worrying about who sits on it.

OK my calling him an arsehole was bad manners and I apologise, but if I was in Sherlock's constituency I'd happily volunteer to canvass for the candidate most likely to unseat him. Coming out against PS workers trying to defend their livelihoods from attack by a bullying minister for Finance was outrageous. Every PS worker in his constituency should remember that come the GE.

I'm not a fan of Partnership either. I reckon the unions should have called a halt after the PESP but it's not really central to this decision.
This (http://www.eesc.europa.eu/?i=portal.en.nat-section) is the relevant part of the EESC web site. It's clear that there's a substantial role for someone with an environmental understanding on the committee. If there's a scandal here at all it's not that we're appointing such a person now but that we neglected to in the past.

Why do you have no time for pillars?

Too many meetings about meetings (add up the cost per hour of everyone at them ), weak representative and implementation structures. They appear to provide co-ordination, but there's always someone missing who ought to be there.

How silly of me! Of course a professional electoralist politician would use forums like this to publicly expound what policies they (or more strictly, their party) claim to have and generally go on about how wonderful they are. At least the man is out in the open and I respect that, unlike the small tribe of public misrepresentatives spinning their lines of $hite over on the other place whose name must not be uttered in decent company.
He doesn't appear to take part much in general debate though.

Perhaps if the farmers didnt hate nature so much , there would be no need for this 'rebalancing' of representation .Grudgingly I say well done greens , for once.
