On the little forum that was a launching pad for this one, Tok!, we had a fitness thread. At the time I was getting over flu. It started me off on a daily walk with the new dog. I go for at least an hour a day at a not very serious pace, and we bring some sticks back (dog is better at this than I am) for the fire.
This seemed a bit uneven, by way of exercise, so in the last couple of weeks I've taken to swinging dumbells about the place. Probably a hilarious sight, but its nice to be getting some little arm muscles. All the better to wave the banning stick at spammers.:)
I remember on Tok some people seemed to have ferocious fitness regimes, a bit like lifers on alcatraz.
Anyone here getting fit ?

I was wondering when that exercise video, I made woud come back to haunt me :D
Seriously though, I have started to jog, and have got up to 3 miles without collapsing, according to my phone, I burn 342 Calories doing this.
I want to loose 10lbs but I love food to much. So I thought that running would be the answer. Unfortunately it seems that weight loss is 80% diet and 20% exercise, so it looks as if this is going to take a while

Don't you believe it: exercise alone is the most successful way of losing weight long term. The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn.
3 miles. I'm very impressed.

very true.
The i phone will estimate how many calories are burned through direct exercise. It will not be 100% correct as your i phone knows nothing about you physically.
The benefits of exercise is that you burn calories in rest too. This is especially true of weight training.

When I went for my first run I could only do 1/2 mile. Mu aim is to be able to jog 5 miles 4 times a week, will be more than pleased with that :)

If you do this, the desired weight loss will be easily achieved.

I split walk/sprint three or four miles most nights with the dogs, plus weight train when I can at home. Unfortunately have been sidetracked from doing it properly recently, but will get back to it in the coming weeks. Giving up the lovely ciggies, a 30 Benson a day habit, was the best thing I ever did, I would never have been able to train like I do otherwise.

Is it better to walk /sprint than just run Toxic
I am still smoking 10 per day, wish I could give them up

Yeah I do it as a kind of crude version of HIIT. I'm pretty fit at the moment but looking to lose another 10lb before building muscle again in the autumn. No chance of that back when I was on the evil weed. The only exercise I got then was searching the house high and low for smokeable cigarette ends when I ran out...

So we are both looking to loose 10lb, we'll have to track it here, might try the sprint/walk thing tomorrow

I've been sidetracked recently, but I'm going to go for 1 to 2lb a week, hopefully by August's end anyway. Then I'll be putting it all back on again, just to be contrary!

Throw a stick for teh dog and race him to it. Walk back to starting point, rinse and repeat.

Six months ago I found the above site, enter your address details and name, they'll send you a free pedometer. It's a nifty little device 'cause you can enter your height and weight to get a reasonably accurate reading of distance run.

I cannot stand the idea of long runs so I focus mainly on resistance training. I tend to use a mainly weights but where possible I will opt for good bodyweight exercises. To break the monotony I opt for 12 week fat loss followed by one week off, then 12 week lean muscle gain followed by another week off, then repeat the cycle. I find it useful to vary the programmes as it keeps my enthusiasm up.
To get a good sweat and fat burn up I opt for HIIT (as mentioned by Toxic) or kettle bell workouts. Kettle bells are a fantastic tool but sadly most people, including instructors, have no idea how to use them. Alternatively, quick body-weight workouts can really do the job.
The following is a great little circuit for getting a good sweat done
10 Squat Jumps
10 Stiff leg deadlifts
1 10 step hand walkout
10 press ups (with a clap if you can)
10 jumping jacks
10 reverse lunges (5 on each leg)
10 pike push ups
10 squat thrusts
If you can work up to doing 6 sets of the above circuit without taking a break then you will be seriously fit.
With the eating, I find that eating really strictly for 6 days and having the 7th day off to eat what you like is a great method for losing fat.

I forgot to say that, on the prison theme, the best bodyweight workouts I have ever read were by Charlie Manson (the british prisoner). He is an absolute genius in this area.

Feeling virtuous after a good walk and some stretches/pilates. The dog is certainly fitter than she was after Christmas. It took months to shake off the after effects.

I myself am a sprinter. I train six times a week. Two weight sessions, three running sessions and a circuit session. Circuit session feels like an army drill. We do exercises to improve our core and a lot of leg exercises to stretch our legs, then we do three sets of arms, stomach and leg exercises, 30 seconds per exercise, followed by a shuttle run at the end. You feel the pain but as as they say, no pain no gain:)

Rise at dawn. cook breakfast every morning. I then walk in the house like a tiger backwards and forwards listening to full symphonies. Then out to water the plants at 7am.
Carrying the water over distances is a good exercise then the digging, planting, spraying, and hedge trimming etc.
Having worked in construction I'm strong and agile still.
I earn my chocolate and cake. :-)

There are situations where I imagine carrying a few extra pounds would work out in someones favour. Years ago when I had testicular cancer (I was lucky I caught it early so didnt need treatment) I met a a lot of other men who had cancer and other such similar situations. A lot of them had faded away thanks to the chemotherapy suppressing their appetite and therefore they were whippets. Always swore I would lose a few lbs but keep a stone or two above what is my recommended weight for the reasons I saw.

Piled on the pounds the last six months + literally doing no exercise. Want to lose around 1 1/2 to two stone
Used to play a lot of rugby but thats out the window, I'll have to find a new activity

Just to ease into whatever it is going to be, walking lunchtime gets some daylight in, as well as the exercise.

I reckon walking is a good idea, find it fierce boring without my dog though.
I'd like to play some sort of sport but I think they are all too ambitious to start off with. I thought about about swimming but I can't really afford it

Swimming can be reasonable enough with the Dublin City or SDCC public pools. I go swimming in Ballyfermot the odd time and its about €6 . There is a rate fo those whom are unemployed or students if you have a student card. Im looking to get back playing badminton, have not played for a year and Im seriously unfit but all badminton courts seem to be booked up
:(
PS if you are walking and not walkig on main roads, if you have a smart phone download some of the BBC documentaries or RTE Podcasts or learn a language while walking! I normally download a new album or two and give them a listen.
My favourite walking route was through Kilmainham, Rialto, up behind Guinnesses and then throught he older parts of town like Francis St and back down on Thomas St and walk back down Kilmainham :)

Top 5 tunes to work out to:
LL Cool J - Momma Said Knock You Out
Survivor - Eye Of The Tiger
Eric Prydz - Call On Me
Underworld - Born Slippy
Who Da Funk - Shiny Disco Balls
Daft Punk - Stronger, Faster, Better.
It's a tricky business but a well placed phat beat can sometimes tide me over 'till I get my second wind.
