RIP....and for Taxation is Theft's sake, let's quote his moment of brilliance with C Walken in True Romance:
"so you're great great great great grandmother f**ked a nig**r"
Respect.
5 ...you were ahead of me.
Brilliant actor.

I think he was a pretty conservative guy & a Republican. Yet he famously played counter culture hippies better than anyone.

Yes. A right wing guy but a great actor out of whom all kinds of complex and extraordinary mad stuff was put down on film.

Not often I care about "Celebs" but Hopper was brilliant. Tragic News.

Absolutely. He was also a link to the great cinematic giants of the 1950's like Brando & Dean

He didn't just "play" the counter - cultural role. He lived it. A lot of the Apoc Now was off the top of his head cos he cld not get it together to learn his lines.
Then he pulled himself back together.
Just like the subject itself - a massive operation and flash show of money and modernity that got bogged down in the phillipine jungle and battered by storms and subject to 'ambush' like the helis suddenly taking off to combat the commie insurgents - the movie and those in it were arrogant, ignored local reality, got bogged down, cldn't finish in time but were in so deep they cld not leave and all went slowly insane. Hopper was the flagship...Tim Page x 2. That's partly why it's so brilliant. It mirrored the reality and insanity of Vietnam. The Sheen punching mirror scene was for real....his birthday, pissed senseless...and Coppola kept the camera rolling.
When i met judgemental aid workers - generally irish- and was asked the inevitable question: "why cambodia?"
i wld reply ' you know the scene in AN where sheen finally tells the capt they are going '50 clicks past the Du Long bridge.'
The capt goes: "That's Cambodia."
Sheen responds: "That's classified".
'That's why I came.'
Hopper's role was a not so exaggerated version of Tim Page/ Al Rockoff - the snapper played by Malcovich in the Killing Fields

Oh yeah, he hung out alot with David Crosby from The Byrds, who was possibly the ultimate hippy. He even modeled Crosby's look for the Easy Rider character.

In fact Easy Rider is very much connected with The Byrds. Hopper is Crosby & Fonda is McGuinn. The Byrds also feature on the soundtrack. This sounds fantastic.

Ah fukk! That's a shame.
He was a great photographer, as well as an actor.
A genuine loss.
RIP.

Dont believe there was a script as such. Hopper subsequently claimed - for better or for good - that the movie was a hugely successful ad for cocaine the usage of whch skyrocketed, as Mr Crosby cld tell us, amongst those who had been acid and weed freaks.
A symbol of the dying hippy zeitgeist.

Yeah a very unique epoch. As Crosby sang, a time to "Let your ***** flag fly!"
Another great Easy Rider story is that the producer approached Dylan one night in a bar to write a song for the film. Dylan got a beermat & wrote
"The river flows, flows to the sea, wherever that river goes, thats were I want to be"
Handed it to the producer & said give that to McGuinn!
Great song & there are some lovely stills of Hopper from the film in this.

Say it aint so. He was a Republican of the more interesting kind. Not one of these Tea Party numbskulls. It annoys me because I do believe that Obama and the Democrats need to be challenged by an intelligent opposition despite the fact that I generally support Obama. While I was never a supporter of the Republicans I hate to see what they are descending into

Hopper once said that his son asked him why he appeared in that film and he answered that he needed to keep him in shoes. His son replied that he didn't need shoes that badly

I wasted a couple of hours of my life on " The Last Movie " and I've never warmed to him since. However that's probably down to the famous northern Irish capacity to hold a grudge !

Here was one of his great lines from Waterworld. He was the best thing about the film. I would put him in the top 10 of Hollywood actors over the last forty years.

Easy Rider just starting on RTE2, for night owls. Not my favourite Hopper but a bit of cine history.
Idlewild on TV3 has amazing dancing. No Hopper of course.
