Heard a bit of Niall Stokes of Hotpress this morning on radio. Among other gems he told a story about Johnny Lydon of the Sex Pistols being removed from the Arbutus Lodge after a few pints too many when he was in Cork for the Macroom musical festival in 1977. It seems that this was the first big outdoor rock summer festival and the grandaddy of gigs like Slane.
I was a bit too young in 1977 to be heading to that kind of stuff so don't know a lot about it. Anybody got more info on this gig?

This would be no doubt be the legendary Macroom Mountain Dew Festival
Was at the 1980 one meself (as a VERY young type of person ... Elvis Costello, Paul Brady, Wishbone Ash were playing and the likes)
I still remember to this day being in Coolcower House itself (it was held in the Grounds of Coolcower) and Costello being in that room ....
I think it was 1978 Hot Press were handing out awards later and a lot of the recipients were present during the concert. A friend that was close to the front told me that Johnny Rotten was at the foot of stage behind the security barrier, shouting 'boring old fart' at Rory Gallagher during the concert. Par for the course for Mr. Lydon and I am sure that it wouldn't have bothered Rory too much.

Both Gallagher and Lydon were producing real rock music during a period of limbo awash with pop bands who dabbed nervously at electronic keyboards and when a guitar or drumkit was hard to find.

Ah now, some folk liked/still like the electro/synth pop side of things - room for all tastes. Beauty of that time and into the 80s was the variance available possibly more so than today :)

Found a fine piece of YouTube footage from the Festival including a interview with some of the local lads and Rory Gallagher on stage. Well worth a look if only for the naff seventies clothes:)
