The vote was 77 to 72 against the motion.
So-called democracy!!!! It is, yet again, a disgrace.

Get over yourself.
They won't allow the bye-elections because they (ff) want to hold on to power and they are abusing the system, in order to do so.
IT IS CALLED ABUSE OF POWER.

maybe but not undemocratic, the democratically elected TDs voted on this, you get over yourself, learn what democracy means before spouting rubbish about it.

You just admitted that 'maybe' it is abuse of power.

An abuse of power is not necessarily undemocratic, it depends and as this was a democratic vote then it was democratic

talk about splitting hairs.....!!!!!
Wow, can you justify everything......????
Votes bought off......to VOTE the 'right' way......nothing democratic about that.
Also how can a vote be democratic with the whip in place.....??? Nothing democratic about that..

parties have whips always have always will, what you propose is a fully independent dail without political parties, how would that work ?

Votes of conscience would be an idea???? Rather than votes of 'de party'!!

Thats the choke point on real democracy. The system runs like this;
Candidate stands for a party in a constituency and promises to represent that constituency.
Candidate is elected on that basis.
First day in the Dail there is a meeting with the Whips whose job it is to ensure that that nonsense is knocked on the head and that TD's are clear on their duty to vote with the party.
Democracy would be fine except for this officially sanctioned diversion of representation of the people.
Solution? Get rid of the whips as they are the choke point on representative democracy.
The objections are normally that this would lead to mob rule. This is rubbish of course as any TD is entitled to refuse to take part in illegal activities.
If democracy existed there would be no such thing as party whips. On the subject of voting with their 'conscience' I would submit that no TD is elected to exercise their conscience. They are elected to represent the people of their constituency- not their 'conscience'.
We've already seen the damage done by TD's suddenly acting with their conscience and not representing the people (classic case being corruption on behalf of the church by Michael 'Traitor' Woods).
A democratic vote to deny the people of the Waterford constituency their democratic right to democratic representation.
Further proof that we have too many public representatives ?

As the people are denied democracy, dont be shocked when the violence starts.

I saw a lunchtime protest organised by Facebook - Call for a General Election in Ireland (http://www.facebook.com/generalelection) outside the Dail on Kildare St.
I Spoke to the organiser and the message is clever and simple - it's not about "what/who do we replace them with" - its about forcing all parties to put their crisis managment proposals on the table and giving the people a chance to decide.
The actual Turnout for the groups was very small, (not much more than the legion of mary group protesting further up). But one thing was VERY striking - almost every car that passed beeped in support of the call for a general election(there were signs asking them to).
It was quite something - the guys were banging pots and pans (like they did in Iceland before they got their election), and people seemed to take notice. There was genuine support apparent.
This is now set to become a weekly event (Lunchtimes from 12.30 each Wednesday). As one person has noted (on the facebook page), this is something that COULD get a lot bigger. Here's hoping!

They have to go now, join the weekly protests, more people that turn up, less chance FF have. Enough is enough folks.

Combined with the Tuesday evening protests I can see the momentum gathering.
Yesterday, I saw Dermot Ahern leaving the Dail, being driven of course. He looked wrecked, tired and stressed. Then, outside the Shelbourne, Timmy Dooley was looking down kildare street, with a few of his gombeen friends. They also looked nervous and worried.
FF are now shitting themselves.
