Check out the second link i've edited in.

I'd go for it being some underground cavity erupting because of a build up of gases.

Yeah, maybe methane being released as the tundra melts away. if only we could capture it: I mean we're all doomed anyway, so why not get a bit of free energy!

That would go part way to explaining how the ancient Shaman of the region reached trance state. Wonder is that Sulfur traces around the opening?

You know, with the myth and lore available it's evident these things have been happening for a long time or least also happened a long time ago. Lends to the theories of global warming/cycle/climate change.

Perhaps, as with myth/lore the science of the day got lost in translation.

Indeed. Worrying though.

I think you are right about finding away of harnessing it, Donal O - it seems to be a semi natural form of fracking, without the chemicals.
