Random tests at the Mater Hospital have shown that the rate of HIV infection amongst those who attended was found to be 3 /1000. The tests were conducted as part of a new test in conjunction with the Jacobi Centre in NY . The new tests give a result in about half an hour of the test being taken . Its quite possible that up to 1/3 of people with HIV do not know they have it. HSPC reports last year showed about 340+ new cases were diagnosed. If its caught early then it can be treated quickly with retrovirals....

A woman broke down yesterday as she told a court of her devastation when she was told she had tested positive for HIV - when in fact her blood sample had been mixed up with that of another person.

There has been a very worrying persistent increase in HIV cases year on year and a worrying indifference to it.

I know of at least three men who have it and its all been through unprotected sex. I dont understand why though as there has been a persistent drive to encourage people to wear protection . Dublin is in dire need of a proper needle exchange programme and an area set aside for a shooting gallery. Clean needle programmes have been proven to reduce transmission rates of HIV
