Fantastic piece of work. Really brings the events of the War of Independence to life. The sophistication of some of the actions of the Cork columns was really amazing.

Not so amazing when you consider that Tom Barry had been a sergeant in the British Army.

Without doubt this provided him with military training and expertise but can hardly be described as the only reason for IRA successes.

I didn't say it was the only reason. I said that it wasn't amazing. With a relative in the DF I now realise that running around with a gun has more to it than meets the eye.

Because 1 man was in the British army ?? The war in Ireland was also very different to the the war fought in France.
I'd be wary of putting too much emphasis on it tbh.

Drilling sergeants and military experience were hugely valuable to the cause but war experience had to be adapted to the conditions. No doubt the advice of veterans of WW 1 helped keep many combatants alive and educated on modern warfare.
Bulmer Hobson's pamphlet on Guerrilla war was published in 1908
