Tourism chiefs in Donegal aim to put the county on the map by making it holidaymakers' top "staycation" choice, it emerged today.
Plans are in place to showcase what the north west has to offer Dubliners this summer by transforming Temple Bar with music, song and dance.
Donegal Live, on Sunday May 16, will feature a ceili mor, step dancing and performances by a host of artists including Altan, Maire Brennan and the Donegal Tenors.
The initiative is the brainchild of John Carr, of the Donegal Association of Dublin and former Donegal Person of the Year, who urged natives to champion the virtues of the county as a tourist destination.
"The hospitality, heritage and scenery of the north west are closer than people think," said Mr Carr.

It is great to see a county taking some initiative to try and boost its economy. This is a good idea and hopefully it will succeed in attracting more people to one of Ireland's most beautiful counties.

Best beaches too, I've heard. Any recommendations for places to go/stay in Donegal?

I am a fan of Glencolmcille as it is an extremely beatuiful area but anywhere in the county should be enjoyable. It is certainly a county that you want to travel around rather than just stay in one place.

Up on Malin Head there is a Hill that is an optical illusion. You pull the handbreak off and your car moves up the hill...
Madness.
Lovely County - Places like Culdaff & Downings are pure heaven when you have the weather

It is a rather amazing county. Far play to them for identifying a potential market and making a concerted effort to gain business from them. This is exactly the kind of initiative that needs to be shown if we are to get business going in this country because sitting back waiting for the clowns in Leinster house to do it will get us nowhere.

Kinnegoe Bay is a beautiful beach, best enjoyed on a weekday when the kids are at school. It can get busy when the sun comes out.
I plan to retire and die in Donegal, providing I'm not cut short before then.

That's it. Only 11 ditches, a swamp and 4 massive man eating holes from the house :) Lovely spot.

Slieve League near Glencolmcille, the 6th highest sea-cliffs in Europe (though I've heard many up there say they are the tallest), three times higher than the Cliffs of Moher..

I was up there with a pretty Irish-American girl called Ciara, a few years back. Not that I got anywhere. You can see where my dad's from, just about, across Donegal Bay in North Sligo. Didn't go to the pub, no, though I was with her in a great place in Carrick and over in Ardara (where two uncles of mine are from). Ah, Ciara... :o
