Hobsbawm's death today will lead to a lot of discussion of his work.

A socialist historian, with severe limitations to his analysis and methodology, imo, he has still exerted a lot of influence.

I agree about the limitations, and I didn't care for his joining the colonialists up in Gwynedd, but yes, interesting and useful.

He spent his boyhood in Vienna and Berlin but, being Jewish, when the Nazis took control, he had to pick up sticks and go to stay with relatives in London.
For most of his life he was a mouthpiece for the Communist Party but he quit his membership in 1986.

Hobsbawm and Chris Hill under MI5 surveillance for decades.

Apparently files on Ralph Miliband, Darcus Howe, Edward Thompson, Raymond Williams, Stuart Hall and others still to come.

Hill is a brilliant historian: his writing on "The English Revolution" of the 17th century is far more political and relevant than the spooks thought.

The files show that Hobsbawm, who became one of Britain’s most respected historians and was made a Companion of Honour by Tony Blair, first came to the notice of MI5 in 1942 when he and 38 colleagues were described as being “obvious members of the CPGB [the Communist party of Great Britain] on Merseyside”. He became number 211,764 on MI5’s index of personal files. Although he was cleared of “suspicion of engaging in subversive activities or propaganda in the army”, MI5 noted it was doubtful that he would be suitable for the Intelligence Corps. Roger Hollis, later head of MI5, and Valentine Vivian, the deputy chief of MI6, prevented him from joining the Foreign Office’s political intelligence department.

The British version of the STASI.

Amusing to think how heavily infiltrated the British Secret Services were by CP members, at that time.

And vice versa!

This is worth reading on COINTELPRO http://monthlyreview.org/2014/09/01/how-we-found-out-about-cointelpro/

The Program, or actually programs, began formally in 1956, although Hoover’s spying had been going on in secret for years. There were twelve programs under COINTELPRO covering different sets of organizations, including the Puerto Rican Independence Movement, the New Left, the American Indian Movement, the Socialist Workers Party (SWP), and almost needless to say, the Communist Party, which had been an FBI target for decades. The FBI infiltrated Liberation News Service (LNS), a New Left version of the Associated Press, using disinformation to make LNS seem an FBI front, and set up a phony newspaper to hire young radicals in order to spy on them. Following a lawsuit by the SWP, it was revealed that an organization with 2,500 members had been infiltrated by 1,600 informers—thus actually strengthening the group for a time, one could reasonably suppose

Thanks. I've read a good bit about cointelpro - its alumni still going strong - but not that.

Did you read this, yesterday on British infiltration of the left and animal rights groups in the 80s ?

It was the norm apparently to establish a close sexual relationship with a member to get accepted in a group and to get information.

This woman sued the Home Office.

Yes, but we should know by now and be sensibly aware that it is a norm. And the one thing they can't easily fake is the politics. I've read that most agents are busy/useful people who don't talk politics if they can avoid it. The Man with the Van (or woman) :)

Time was when the left was pretty good at intelligence.

I think there is a wish in people for leaders/insittutions to be paternal, stern but caring figures /bodies because we feel more secure that way.

Comfortable, but not real.
