A feature of the application of global power by the US is taking on the tactics of popular uprisings and revolutions. These tactics generally involve more covert than overt action.
The "Colour Revolutions" that peacefully removed targeted regimes and governments were carefully stoked and manipulated by a range of non military means.
In many other regions and states,- Iraq, Afghanistan, for example, covert military means (including psychological operations) have been used to attain regime change in favour of US friendly outcomes.
There is another type of warfare—new in its intensity, ancient in its origin—war by guerrillas, subversives, insurgents, assassins; war by ambush instead of by combat, by infiltration instead of aggression, seeking victory by eroding and exhausting the enemy. Instead of engaging him. It preys on unrest.
