IN A bid to make non-Irish nationals feel more at home, Mayor Gerry McLoughlin wants to see the city’s street signs in Polish - and “African”.

At present, all street signs across Ireland are displayed in English, then Irish.

But the new mayor wants to see Limerick go a step further - and embrace its sizeable population from Europe and Africa by including further translations.

“I am passionate about bringing everyone together. I was an immigrant myself: I have family abroad still in Wales and Australia so I understand what it is like. We have thousands of Poles and other foreign nationals here,” he explained, “I would like to see some Polish and African signs going up,” he said in an interview with the Limerick Leader.

Gerry should know there is 2000+ languages spoken on the continent of Africa and no such thing as "African language". But aside from that it is a lovely gesture and would be a sign that we are more au fait with the world than we were previously. Polish and languages like Yoruba and Igbo are languages that are now very common in Ireland . It would be a mark of respect if we did include at least some of the major street signs in Ireland as part of an initiative :)

Dumber than Nama. Can't believe he said it out loud.

1. What's the Polish for Raheen?

2. What service do they propose withdrawing to pay for this?

I'm a tolerant person, but I would resent some politician spending tax money on this nonsense "As a mark of respect".

If we're going to pull money out of our arse I propose we fill potholes or hire teachers rather than inventing new names for places.

I wouldn't let this guy, or anyone who supports this proposal, use a pair of scissors unaccompanied, never mind direct public policy.

Find a street, fill the potholes with teachers and rename it in Polish! Simples!

In terms of cost I dont imagine it would be that much. A few signs with extra lettering , just cut back on silly expenses for the councillors :)

The McLoughlin family seems to have a certain knack for self publicity:D

SOUTHSIDE councillor Orla McLoughlin urged city officials to do all they can to bring Marks & Spencer into the city – because “it has a certain je ne sais quoi”.
She also admitted she has a soft spot for the lingerie section in the popular chain.

Can only be a matter of time before Ginger/Locky loses the rag with someone and it will all end in tears.

Oh, dear. Another braindead numpty preparing for a career in the septic tank of Irish politics.

No department store planner would put a middling to upmarket store in a country where the purchasing power of the community/population it is designed to serve is likely to diminish over the coming years. It might make sense in Dublin but Dublin already hads Marks and Sparks stores. They are more likely to close one rather than open another
