Australians are mourning the death of the man known as the "Angel of The Gap", who stopped hundreds of people from leaping to their deaths at Sydney's most notorious suicide spot. Mr Ritchie spent 50 years coaxing desperate people back from The Gap, the notorious cliff at Watsons Bay where hundreds have died or thought about taking their lives. He helped save 500 despairing souls - usually with little more than compassion, a warm smile and a hot cuppa.

"Those who knew him knew he was a very strong person and a very capable person," Mr Ritchie's daughter Sue said today.

I will be honest and say that I had never heard of the man until this posting.

But all I can say now is that the earth is poorer for his passing.

I have family down under and they thought he was a saint. Apparently one of ever couple of people visiting the Gap is thinking of suicide.

He's needed at the Cliffs of Moher.

But we have our angels.

There is a group of young people that provide 24/7 aqua diving cover of some places in Ireland, to prevent death by suicide.

Well, both they and Don Richie seem to go almost entirely unsung. Certainly I'd never hear of either till now, but I'm glad I did.
