The Executive Congress of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) has decided not to make any recommendation to members on how to vote in the EU Fiscal Treaty.

Not so much " all for one and one for all " as every man for himself.

I think that this is a de facto victory for the No side. I suspect that some of the union establishment wanted to support a Yes.

The brothers are great for throwing shapes with the government who indulged them.
It ain't happening with the new paymasters cause they don't give a toss.
That reality might be starting to sink in.
Last year Begg and the brothers went to visit their brothers in Germany.
Nothing was ever mentioned about that visit.
And that I suppose tells you everything.

........

ICTU general secretary David Begg said was not possible to agree on a position on the Fiscal Treaty referendum, as everyone thinks it is a bad treaty that Ireland did not have a lot of engagement with.

Begg said it was a matter of record that he was personally against the treaty but could not tell affiliated unions across the country how to vote.

He refused to say which way he was going to vote when he was asked the question on Six One this evening.

The likes of these fellows should be ignored, particularly those who advocated a yes to lisbon vote

After all, we had Norris jumping around the Seanad about the Fiscal in recent days, but what way pray tell did he advocate people vote for during Lisbon II

These are the people who have sat on their hands, and held the trade union movement back, through four years of daylight robbery by the banks and assaults on public services, wages and working conditions.

But it seems to be the democratic socialist position generally - the Treaty has been described as a legal ban on socialism, but they will vote for it, providing austerity is given some kind of sticking plaster of a "jobs programme."

The country's second largest trade union IMPACT has said it is recommending its members vote 'Yes' in the Fiscal Treaty referendum next month.

The union's executive met today and has issued the recommendation, saying a 'No' vote could result in a lack of money for social welfare benefits, pensions and even the pay packets of public sector workers.

Yeah.... I'm sure that they are very concerned about social welfare recipients .....and that the risk to their own pay and pensions is simply an after-thought.:p
