Maman Poulet is reporting on the usual crusty Irish Catholic "No sex before we are married" St Patricks Day parade marchers who will as usual march down New York.

http://www.mamanpoulet.com/st-patricks-day-exclusion-continues-in-new-york/#comments

Joan Burton has been despatached by the government to attend the official parade which is still a private event. There is an unofficial parade also and apparently we have sent Kathleen Lynch to the event. Will be tweeting Joan Burton to ask if she intends boycotting it and asking the bigots when they intend to allow all Irish to celebrate ...

I wonder if the same legal grounds are still being used to exclude LGBT people? I see Mary McAleese refused to take part because of this issue...

A 1995 conservative U.S. Supreme Court decision allowed the private
sponsor of the Boston St. Patrick’s Day Parade to exclude a group of
gays and lesbians.
The 9-0 SCOTUS decision said that parades are a “form of expression”
protected by the First Amendment and that organizers could not be
compelled to include groups whose messages they did not favor. This
year, a second, inclusive parade will take place in Boston, following
a mile behind the first parade.
In New York, gays have again been banned from marching on the 17th.
For over 20 years the Ancient Order of Hibernians, which organizes the
parade, has barred LGBT and Irish gay groups from marching. The
Hibernians claim the parade is a private, religious procession in
order to to justify keeping LGBT groups out.
New York Catholic Archbishop Timothy Dolan, who has compared
homosexuality to alcoholism, has expressed his disapproval of marriage
equality and “homosexuals”.

I emailed Joan with a copy of this thread and I hope she takes note. I cc'd Norris also. The parade looks like a religious procession alright...

So as I understand it the government sends a junior minister in an official capacity to the alternative parade and a senior minister also in an official capacity to the 'officia' parade.
That's a bit Irish, no?

Very much so, its a case that we must be trying to cover all bases. We dont went to piss off them Irish Americans now, their money means they can piss all over LGBT rights here.....If I were gay in New York I would have an occupy St Paddys Day parade with glitter and everything else. I am not a fan of Pride but dont agree with them being excluded ....

Are gays completely banned from marching? What if they are in a band or whatever?

There's some good background on the recent history of the NY parade here:

The Fifth Avenue parade has swum in complex political waters throughout its history. In 1983, an 81-year-old named Michael Flannery was chosen as grand marshal. He had been a founder of Noraid, a fundraising organisation set up after the start of the Troubles, and was an open supporter of the IRA. In a gesture that made headlines, Cardinal Terence Cooke declined to shake Flannery’s hand. Today the parade’s website still states: “The only banners allowed are ones identifying the unit or ‘England Get Out of Ireland’.” Only a handful of groups choose that message, but Dunleavy says that for now it will remain. “My policy is that until there’s a united Ireland it should stay there.”

Jaysus:eek:

A Massachusetts school principal has enraged the local community by renaming St Patrick’s Day ‘O’Green Day’ in an effort to encourage diversity and remove the Catholic element.

Green mash not green spuds. Probably mash with food dye added. Or cooked by someone with a cold. ;)

Not PC at all in Canada to say "Happy Christmas" or "Merry Christmas". You are supposed to say "Happy Holidays". It drives me nuts and I'm an athiest.

Canada is doomed by the miasma of idiocy drifting over its southern border.

Haven’t heard about any controversy this year. NY State has legalized GM last year but that won’t be controlling. The Supreme Court decision, because it’s broad, not limited just to gays, will still control. AOH are free to exclude the gays from their parade, but unable prevent gays holding their own parade. Just have to hope that AOH will eventually wise up. Couple of years ago US customs raided the Irish flights for smuggled rashersNsaudages

Its a bit of a sticking point for me, Im not a fan of gay pride but when people tell me I cant do something then I get pissed off. AOH are seriously out of touch, we are meant to be Ireland of a thousand welcomes !
