Calls for an independent Republic of Cork will likely increase!
Oil exploration company Providence Resources has found the country's first viable oil well 70km off the Cork coast.
It has announced that its Barryroe oil well has delivered the first commercial rate of oil offshore in Ireland.

From November 2011: A Fine Gael Councillor is tonight expected to propose the introduction of a passport especially for Cork before a sitting of Cork City Council.
The surprise idea, being commandeered by Fine Gael Councillor Laura McGonigle is a sort of Rebel City take on the recently introduced Irish heritage certificates, a sort of Government-endorsed money racket whereby patriotic members of the Irish diaspora can (for just €15) get their very own 'Certificate of Irish Heritage' for all that that's worth (precious little).

If Cork oil was nationalised would it be distributed by Langerco?

Of course. 500 miles of razor wire have been shipped to Clonafreedom (formerly Clonakilty) Liberty Center. Anyone who opposes the freedom to do as Washington decrees will be given free accommodation and hydrotheraputic re-education.

Jokes aside, while this would be good news indeed if this state had an oil & gas taxation policy that delivered benefits to the general public rather than to Big Oil, the public finances will not see a penny in tax paid on production from this well for a very long time, if ever. Providence's exploration costs (not 'well-specific') from the 25 years previous to the date that field goes into production can be set against their potential tax liability, meaning we are effectively paying for Sir Anthony's oil & gas gambles from the previous quarter-century, while he gets to pocket all the profits. There will be more of these 'finds' over the next few years, just to make sure all the entreprenhoors get on this gravy train before the desperation of austerity-addled govts. forces Oireland Inc. to re-examine the Burke/Ahern/Ryan terms for oil & gas production.

Just before anyone gets too excited, that well is producing just over 3000 barrels of oil a day. Our national daily usage is 200,000 barrels, I think.
A Ghawar sized find and answer to our economic ills this is not, regardless of whether Beans O'Reilly ever pays any corpo tax or not.
The only hope is that it might encourage others to go looking for more.

Antrim might be about to overtake Cork!
Providence Resources said around 200 million barrels of oil could be recovered close to Rathlin Island, producing 20 billion US dollars (£13 billion) in revenue. The area explored covers around 30 square kilometres.

Soft interview with Tony O'Reilly today was good but Pat Kenny taking it upon himself to offer rebuttals to critical texts afterwards was better.
A PWC report, paid for by Providence themselves, reveals there much oil and jawbs to be had however there is concern about tax and the report concludes the current regime is 'appropriate' and we need some sort of assurances from Government to help Tony sleep at night. That business over in Mayo is "a blot on our copy book" and "obviously people have a right to protest" but this saga is the one question our prospectors are always asked. Apparently.

Always good to have fifteen minutes of unhindered lobbying on prime time radio. I think Providence may be a bit worried right now. Maybe somebody is sounding them out to pay a bit more tax and they're pushing back.
Oil and gas exploration firm Providence Resources (http://www.irishtimes.com/search/search-7.1213540?tag_company=Providence%20Resources&article=true) said 2012 was a “landmark” year for the company, as it completed its first well at Barryroe.
But the company reported an operating loss of €5.4 million for the year, higher than the €4.08 million recorded in 2011. That was mainly due to the increased administration expenses as Providence embarked on its multi-basin drilling campaign.
The Barryroe appraisal well was the first of six that are planned for the oil field off the coast of Ireland, with work on the second well beginning last month

Well, that didn't take long. Gavin O'Reilly took over the PK show last week to lobby for government action on tax relating to oil exploration and lo and behold, here's Pat in the Dail today announcing a new review into exactly that.
Minister for Energy Pat Rabbitte (http://www.irishtimes.com/search/search-7.1213540?tag_person=Pat%20Rabbitte&article=true) is initiating a formal review of the fiscal terms for oil and gas exploration but he has rejected demands from an Oireachtas (http://www.irishtimes.com/search/search-7.1213540?tag_organisation=Oireachtas&article=true) committee for a Norwegian-style regime with very heavy taxation.
“I struggle to understand how anyone could expect Ireland (http://www.irishtimes.com/search/search-7.1213540?tag_location=Ireland&article=true) to have Norwegian-style tax rates without first having Norwegian levels of commercial discoveries.”
He said the review of terms will conclude by the end of the year, to provide clarity for the next exploration licensing round. “It is my intention following the conclusion of this debate to seek further independent expert advice on the ‘fitness-for-purpose’ of Ireland’s fiscal terms,” he said.
Sounds like he's quoting from Reilly last week.

O'Reilly got his lobbying in last week. Now it's Aidan Heavey's turn.
Aidan Heavey (http://www.irishtimes.com/search/search-7.1213540?tag_person=Aidan%20Heavey&article=true), chief executive of Tullow Oil (http://www.irishtimes.com/search/search-7.1213540?tag_company=Tullow%20Oil&article=true), which has large scale exploration and production projects in Africa and South America, said yesterday that the terms the Republic offers to exploration companies, “are not that great” in a global context. He argued that it is an issue of risk and return.
Same hymn sheet as O'Reilly on everything really. What a coincidence.
Mr Heavey also argued that the controversy over the Corrib gas field, which is due to come into production by 2015, but which was discovered in 1996, damaged the Republic’s reputation. “Corrib has been around for a long, long time,” he said. “All the hassle and trouble getting Corrib in has not done us any favours.”
