Well, Rabitte says it is not a new tax. And everyone who emailed to complain he says must have found out via a public service channel of some kind.

I really feel for the small number of people who have no tv set or radio and are still going to be forced to pay.

"However he expressed scepticism that these people had not found out about the plans through some form of public service platform, even if it was not the television. "
Someone should tell him that they have the internet on computers now.

Broadcasting Charge, Household Charge, Water Charge, Septic Tank Charge ... grand aul country ain't it
Time to go live in a treehouse ... probably introduce Tree Residence Charge next ....
How much of what RTE does is Public Service broadcasting? They have advertisers to pay for the running of RTE. If they need to trim fat and work within their means then let them do so
The TV licence was just incorporated from the Brits but it makes sense over there as there are no advertisements on the BBC

I wish somewhere there was a comprehensive list of the taxes for which we are now liable:
Income tax
Vat
Household charge
Universal (?) charge
Pension levy
Health levy
Ditto PRSI? All now in Universal Charge?
Payment for services - (The Dubliners being charged a mere €100 a year for refuse collection is laughable but that's not the point)
Septic tanks
Car tax
Dog licences
TV/RTE licence
Inheritance tax
Stamp duty
DIRT
The 'Old Reliable' taxes - alcohol, petrol, tobacco.
What are the others?
Does carbon tax affect us?
Fire brigade call-out fees?
I hate stealth taxes.
I wish we could could have a clear, fair simple system whereby people according to means could all contribute to the public purse, for worthwhile uses, that's the tricky bit these daysI am not particularly interested in corporation tax, second homes or capital gains tax, just the stuff that affects ordinary folk on a day to day basis.

Labour appear to be reluctant to promote a higher income tax on the well-to-do but readily introduce taxes which are most felt by the poor and low-income citizens.

The Independent media providers are seeking some of the pie. And rightly so
The Independent Broadcasters of Ireland welcomed the proposed fee, but urged the minister to also conduct a review on how the revenue will be used from the charge.
"In various media interviews Minister Rabbitte has referred to RTE as the State's 'public service' broadcaster," the group said in a statement.
"We would like to remind Minister Rabbitte that with over 2.4m listeners each weekday, all independent radio stations provide a high level of public service and that this is a condition of their licence."

BUPA syndrome.
Go into business knowing all the rules and regulations but with a plan to exert pressure to have inconvenient rules changed and the corporate welfare tap opened wide.
