As not to derail the tax thread any further. Gerard Cunningham did some work last year on SF's claims.
He found SIPO had no record of donations from TD's to the party and things are left a bit unclear to say the least

All the articles are here.

It might answer a few questions and pose a few more...

There was some discussion here on SF and wages. I wonder about expenses. None of the SF reps look like they stint themselves on clothes or holidays.

Has anyone ever got an answer as to how much they claim and how much they keep in expenses - Dail and EP ?

Had a conversation with a SF TD about this a while back.

The money goes straight into a SF account, they then get some money from that, the average wage. Expenses as far as I can remember would be typical for any TD, they are reasonable and pay for the essential expenses which tbf, they would be hard pressed to pay out of their average industrial wage.

Mary Lou would be the only one who would drop a good deal on clothes I reckon, most wear cheap suits, I don't mean that in a derogatory way, nothing at all wrong with cheap suits, they are well turned out.

As for holidays... Not quite sure what you mean by that, most wouldn't go on extravagant holidays. Raymond McCartney goes on a caravan holiday every year in Ireland for instance, lots of them holiday in Ireland, some would have the two weeks in Spain like many ordinary people have done.

As for cars... generally they are just ordinary ones, some drive second hand, no mercs or beamers. The Sindo of course lies on this point to try and get the digs into the shinners, I remember it claimed that Gerry Adams was driven in a brand new Range Rover from the Dáil to a nearby hotel (the Shelbourne I believe? They offer their services for free also AFAIK) for a press conference. This was an utter lie, I know for a fact the man walked.

Gerry and a few of the old heads have holiday homes in Donegal, again not extravagant fare, reflective of a long career.

As for this stuff being declared... I wonder if the ULA heads have this all on record, I think the socialist party operates in the same way?

Also, didn't MMG open his books during the presidential campaign?

I'm not comparing them with FF / FG. I expect much higher standards - in part because SF suggests that it accepts they are needed.
