What do people think of trying to organise a meeting of independents committed to the idea of creating a new party some time during the conference (perhaps in the lunch break)?

I would suggest asking all independents. Those not committed to a new party may still have a common interest with others in strengthening the internal democracy of the ULA, for example.

We do not need yet another political party.
Parties are designed to get their leaders into Cabinet and then do whatever they want.
A Dáil of independents would not be a bad thing but until such time as we have a parliamentary democracy which is not a Cabinet politburo, we are left with the three main parties on the right and Sinn Féin and ULA on the left. Any more "parties" on the left will only further fragment left and left-of-center TDs.
The only people who could change things are the Irish people themselves. We all know that won't happen.

Ordinary individuals hane no hope of taking-on and beating organized right-wing parties such as Finne Gwael/Labour and Fianna Fail who have always controlled the Cabinets since the beginning of the state. They will need to rely on those who have gone into public service and who are organized into political parties or alliances on the left.

4-5 million people might stand a chance if they stopped being Irish and started being Greek for one week. That would be a considerable system shock in Ireland where we've never had consistent industrial unrest, at least for not near a 100 year. We need something done now, not in 5 or 10 years time when maybe if we're lucky people will vote SF and the ULA in, and maybe they won't be the same as every other political party(they wouldn't, yeah). The problem is people are to resigned to being resigned and scapegoating minorities like foreigners and travellers whilst the middle classes blame the poor.

Sure, sounds like a good idea.
I think bolshevik implied the "new party" was the progression of the alliance into a party.
How about we propose a motion calling for a constitution to be presented by a representative group by May 1, to be voted on and amended at the summer conference?

This is really a proposal that should come out of a summer conference and then be subject to substantial debate and discussion throughout the organisation.
Only giving a month or so for discussion and debate among the membership on such an important document would be a mistake in my opinion. The work of any such group coming up with a draft constitution would really need to be completed at least 3 months prior to a conference to allow time for proper discussion on it and amendments to it.

I did understand that, thanks. The point I was making was that imo, I don't think any independents should be excluded from the meeting, even it they are unsure or opposed to moving from an alliance to a party.
They still may have some shared issues about how the alliance works.
Should the Party not also have a basic programme, as well as a constitution?
There is also a need for agreed interim processes to ensure that the way the constitution and programme is drawn up is inclusive of the membership, including independents.

I think you are right - any such fringe meeting should be open to all independents
