The ULA Conference is penciled in for late January. We have to work with the alliances we have and build them into the parties we want. Then, we should iron out the mechanisms by which motions are nominated, discussed and agreed to provide the ULA its own internal life, without which it is doomed to failure. This thread will together(ideally involving SP, SWP, PBP and others) concentrate composing a motion related to : the upcoming EU treaty and the ULA orientation towards it

Should the ULA call for a flat-out "No"?
Should the ULA call for a boy-cott?
Should the ULA call for some alternative EU?
Should the ULA initiate an EU wide campaign?
A combination of some/all above? None?

What do you think our position should be? Discuss here and we'll work out a motion.

The ULA should call for a flat-out 'no' IMO, and it's vital we do so ASAP. The reason the no side won Lisbon 1 is because they started to campaign pretty much immediately. This post on the CLR emphasises why it is so important that it is rejected: http://cedarlounge.wordpress.com/2011/12/15/the-fiscal-compact-last-chance-saloon-for-the-left/

I know that the same people behind the No Campaign(and all the EU treaty campaigns) have been coming out of hibernation and doing the groundwork for the new campaign over the past few weeks. I don't think there is any ULA representation there (yet?) though, just the individual components. Paul Murphy MEP held a (SP) protest outside the EU Commission offices in Dublin during the week so things are getting started good and early.

The treaty must be defeated alright. A Merkozian future has dire implications for Ireland. Any campaign needs to be linked in with a European-wide campaign though.
