Today in history: 25 November 1999

Six-year-old Cuban refugee Elian González was rescued by a pair of sport fishermen off the coast of Florida.

The U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) initially placed the boy with paternal relatives in Miami, who sought to keep him in the United States against his father's demands that he be returned to Cuba. A federal district court's ruling that only the boy's father, and not his extended relatives, could petition for asylum on the boy's behalf was upheld by the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals. After the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear the case, Elian was taken from his relatives at gunpoint and returned to Cuba in June 2000.

Elian joined the Young Communist Union of Cuba in June 2008 shortly after graduating junior high school. At age 15, he began military school.

Nice idea for a thread Holly. Baby Elian has grown into a fine, handsome young man. In all the years of terror meted out to the Cubans by the Americans its nice to see a story with a happy ending.

Here's a fine Manic Street Preachers song about Baby Elian.

For a while, back in 1999, Elian must have been the most famous boy in the world.

My answer to the above: A child is better off with kith and kin.

Interesting lookback here:

It's funny cuz my International Business professor was just discussing this topic not too long ago. He informed the class that the U.S. government's decision to release Elian to his father was the prime reason why Bush was elected into Presidency. The Cuban Americans usually voted Democrat, but after the U.S. sent Elian back to Cuba, irate Cuban Americans changed their votes to Republican. During this time, President Clinton (whose a Democrat) was in office. They refused to vote Democrat because it was the Democrats who sent Elian back to a country that his mom risked her life to get him away from. The majority of Cuban Americas resided in Miami, FL during the time of the whole Elian controversy, which is why it is not a coincidence that Florida was the state that made the difference in deciding who would become our new President, Gore or Bush. My professor told us that the number of votes in Florida that led Bush to win was the same number of Cuban Americans residing in Miami, FL at that time. Hint Hint. So take another good look at one of the main reasons Bush got elected in office in the first place to run our country down to hell.
